Homa Bay County Accident Claims Two Lives

Homa Bay, [Date] – A tragic road accident in Homa Bay County has resulted in the deaths of two individuals. The incident occurred on Monday at Arujo bridge along the Homa Bay–Rongo Road, casting a pall over the ongoing ODM grassroots elections at Kabunde Social Hall.

According to Homa Bay Sub-county Police Commander Emmanuel Kiplagat, the accident involved a motorcycle and a lorry. The two men on the motorcycle, identified as Alfred Omollo and Collins Opiyo, were en route to the ODM elections when the collision occurred. Preliminary investigations suggest that the lorry was in the process of overtaking another vehicle when it collided head-on with the motorcycle.

"The lorry was overtaking another vehicle, leading to a head-on collision between the lorry and the motorcycle which the two men had boarded," said Kiplagat.

One of the victims died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital. The hospital's CEO, Vincent Oduor, confirmed the death, stating, "One of them had died while another one died in our theater.” A third individual survived the accident.

In the aftermath of the collision, a group of youths attempted to attack the lorry driver and set the vehicle ablaze. However, the driver managed to escape and sought refuge at Homa Bay Police Station. Kiplagat noted that the driver sustained injuries from the impact, as the vehicle's windows were broken. He is currently receiving medical attention.

"The driver went to a hospital after sustaining injuries because the window panes of his vehicle were broken due to the accident impact. We are conducting investigations, and appropriate legal action will be taken when he is discharged from the hospital," Kiplagat stated.

The damaged motorcycle has been towed to Homa Bay Police Station for further investigation. Police are urging all road users to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent future accidents. Kiplagat also appealed to the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands following accidents and to instead allow the police to handle such situations.

"Let our youth avoid taking the law into their hands when an accident takes place. They should refer the persons involved to police," said Kiplagat.

The bodies of the deceased have been moved to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital Morgue pending further arrangements.

Local authorities are continuing their investigation into the accident. Road safety remains a critical concern, and this incident underscores the importance of responsible driving and adherence to traffic laws.
