JoySports Ayinga-Walter Receives Recognition at AIPS Awards 2024

JoySports journalist and UniMAC–IJ student, Joseph Ayinga-Walter, has achieved global recognition, securing 5th place globally and 3rd in Africa in the Young Reporters Broadcasting category at the 2024 AIPS Sport Media Awards in Rabat, Morocco. His acclaimed feature, “From Riches to Rags: The Story of Eric Agyemang, Former League Star,” was celebrated for its profound narrative and social impact.
The story recounts the decline and subsequent resurgence of Eric Agyemang, a former Berekum Chelsea midfielder, who faced homelessness and alcoholism. Following the story's release, Agyemang received considerable support, re-established connections with former teammates, and obtained stable employment at Sapholda Ventures. Ayinga-Walter’s distinguished ranking places him among the world's most promising young sports journalists, surpassing numerous entries from a pool of over 1,890 submissions worldwide. His final position was determined through a rigorous three-stage evaluation process overseen by the AIPS Executive Committee.
Additionally, Muftawu Nabila Abdulai secured 8th place in the Best Column writing category at the 2024 AIPS Sport Media Awards for his investigative work on Ghana's 2022 FIFA World Cup finances. His article, “2022 World Cup: GFA declares $7.9m prize money instead of $9m”, examines the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) disclosure of Ghana’s prize money from the Qatar World Cup.
The column reveals inconsistencies between FIFA's official $9 million prize allocation for group-stage exits and the GFA’s reported figure of $7.9 million, raising questions about transparency and accountability in the management of national football finances. This marks Muftawu’s third top-10 finish at the AIPS Awards, cementing his status among Africa’s leading sports media professionals. His continued success reflects a strong tradition of Ghanaian excellence in global sports journalism.
