According to Magwanga, unidentified gunmen trailed him as he was heading to his home, prompting a last-minute change of route to evade the suspected attackers.
His security team, already on high alert, engaged the assailants in a shootout near his gate after identifying the threat.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on a vehicle they believed was carrying the deputy governor.
The incident has sparked concerns among residents and leaders, especially as it comes amid heightened political tension in the region.
During a Tuesday, May 13, meeting to finalise preparations for the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled for June 1, Magwanga appeared visibly shaken and uncomfortable—a demeanour that did not go unnoticed by the public.
Many Kenyans called for heightened security for Magwanga, while others urged leaders in the county, led by county boss Gladys Wanga, to foster unity and avoid creating an atmosphere of fear among their colleagues.

"Is it only me who is reading the body language of Magwanga not to be comfortable in this meeting? He seems lost so deep in other thoughts, and not a happy man. His spirit seems heavy and worried."

"Magwanga has some guilt in him. He appears a cornered person. This character shouldn't be entertained around. Something hidden is running through his mind."
Meanwhile, following the thwarted murder attempt, Governor Gladys Wanga expressed deep concern.
She called on security agencies to act swiftly and impartially in investigating the matter and ensuring justice is served.
The governor also appealed to residents to remain calm, united, and committed to peace and the rule of law.
