Twist in Ondo Varsity Murder: Key Suspect Dies Mysteriously in Custody
The death of Femi Oladele, also known as 'Tallex', the prime suspect implicated in the alleged kidnapping and brutal murder of two Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) students, John Abbah and Andre Okah, while in police custody, has ignited a wave of confirmation and controversy. Oladele, a prominent landlord in Akungba where one of the victims, John Abbah, resided as his tenant, stood accused of orchestrating the abduction, robbery, and subsequent murder of both Abbah and his friend, Andre Okah. Disturbingly, Andre Okah was also reported to have been raped prior to her death.
Olayinka Ayanlade, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, officially confirmed Oladele's demise. Ayanlade stated that the suspect had fallen ill and had been under continuous medical supervision, frequently moving in and out of the hospital, before he ultimately died on Friday morning. However, independent sources, choosing to remain anonymous, offered a different perspective, suggesting that Oladele developed an unusual illness shortly after allegedly providing a confessional statement concerning the brutal killings and the shallow burial of the students.
In the ongoing investigation, the police have successfully recovered the decomposing remains of Andre Okah. Concurrently, extensive efforts are still in progress to locate the body of John Abbah. The police investigation has also led to further arrests of individuals believed to be complicit in the case. These include Ojo Michael, identified as an alleged abductor; Abdul Mubarak, who reportedly purchased an iPhone 14 Pro Max belonging to one of the victims; and two additional suspects, Kola and Micheal, who are accused of withdrawing a sum of N800,000 from John Abbah's bank account. All arrested suspects are reportedly cooperating fully with the authorities. The Ondo State Police Command has strongly advised the public to disregard any narratives that might distort the facts of the case, reassuring the public of their unwavering commitment to pursuing justice comprehensively and ensuring that all individuals involved face the full force of the law. The Command also extended its deepest sympathies to the grieving families and the academic communities affected by the tragedy and confirmed that security measures have been enhanced across higher educational institutions within the state.
Amidst these developments, the Adekunle Ajasin University Students Union Government (SUG) has voiced profound disbelief and sorrow regarding Oladele's death in custody. The SUG asserts that this incident raises critical questions concerning police transparency and accountability. In a collective statement, signed by SUG President Salami Akeem, General Secretary Bakare Abiodun, and Public Relations Officer Ajidagba Mosadoluwa, the union issued a strict ultimatum to the Nigerian Police to immediately produce Oladele's corpse. While initial reports indicated a three-hour deadline, other accounts specified 24 hours. The SUG unequivocally demanded a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the killings, emphasizing that all investigative findings must be publicly disclosed and managed with the utmost integrity. They issued a stern warning that a failure to comply with their demands could precipitate a large-scale demonstration involving AAUA students and other concerned Nigerian students. The union affirmed its steadfast commitment to upholding the welfare and dignity of its members, prepared to resort to peaceful protests as a fundamental right if their demands are not met. Their demands were directly communicated to the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal.
Earlier details surrounding the crime indicated that Femi Oladele had allegedly instructed suspected cultists to "deal with" the two students due to perceived disrespect. The grim discovery of the students' bodies near the Ondo-Ekiti border emerged weeks after their classmates reported them missing from classes.
