Trump Posts AI Picture of Himself Dressed As Pope

Former US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by posting an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the Pope on his Truth Social platform. This occurred shortly after the death of Pope Francis and just days before cardinals are set to convene to elect a new pontiff. The image, which quickly went viral, depicts Trump in papal attire, including white robes, a gold crucifix, and a mitre hat, with his right index finger pointed skyward. The White House account reposted the image, further amplifying its reach.

The timing of Trump's post has been described as unsettling, with some viewing it as disrespectful given the recent passing of Pope Francis. Reactions have been mixed, ranging from amusement to outrage. Some critics have even suggested that the Vatican should sue Trump for what they consider profanity. Others have linked the image to broader themes of power and symbolism, particularly in light of the Pope's historical role as a spiritual and moral figure.

Trump's actions follow recent remarks in which he jokingly expressed interest in becoming the next Pope. Asked who he would like to succeed Pope Francis, Trump said, "I'd like to be pope, that would be my number one choice." He also mentioned a "very good" cardinal in New York, likely referring to Archbishop Timothy Dolan, known for his theological conservatism and opposition to abortion.

The context surrounding Trump's post includes the upcoming conclave, scheduled to begin on May 7, during which cardinals will gather in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel to elect Pope Francis's successor. Approximately 133 cardinals under the age of 80 are expected to participate in the highly secretive process, using paper ballots to cast their votes. A two-thirds majority is required for a candidate to be elected, after which the ballots will be burned, and white smoke will signal the election of a new Pope to the world.

Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday (April 21, 2025), was laid to rest with Trump attending the funeral service. During his presidency, Francis was often critical of Trump, particularly regarding the construction of a border wall with Mexico. Francis stated in 2016, "Anyone, whoever he is, who only wants to build walls and not bridges is not a Christian."
