Nigerian troops operating under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), supported by personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, successfully thwarted an attempted mass abduction by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, specifically around 1:30 AM, at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) in Monguno, Borno State. It has been confirmed that this particular facility is currently utilized by the Borno State Government as temporary accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno, with the original occupants having been relocated due to security concerns. This swift intervention led to the rescue of all 46 students present at the time, preventing a potentially tragic outcome.
According to Captain Mohammed Goni, the acting spokesman for Operation HADIN KAI, the terrorists managed to gain access to the school premises with the assistance of suspected collaborators. However, alert security personnel, consisting of OPHK troops and Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL) personnel, immediately engaged the attackers with coordinated and overwhelming firepower. As the confrontation intensified, a Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force was promptly deployed to reinforce the security elements already on the ground. Faced with the superior combat capability and resolute resistance of the combined security forces, the ISWAP militants were compelled to abandon their criminal mission and fled in disarray, failing to achieve their objective of abducting students.
While the abduction attempt was successfully contained, the encounter was not without consequences. Parts of the school infrastructure sustained damage during the exchange of gunfire. Tragically, Captain Goni confirmed that some students were fatally struck by sporadic gunfire from the terrorists during the fierce firefight. Following the cessation of hostilities, all 46 students at the facility were successfully rescued and immediately evacuated to Kinnasara Barracks, Monguno. Upon arrival, they received prompt medical assessment and appropriate care, and all were subsequently confirmed to be medically stable.
Operation HADIN KAI has extended its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased students, reassuring the public of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives of residents and protecting critical public institutions across the North East region. In close liaison with the Borno State Government, comprehensive measures are being implemented to enhance security. Furthermore, an intensive investigation is currently underway to identify and apprehend the suspected collaborators who aided the terrorists.
