Tributes Pour In as Former Heavyweight Star Joe Bugner Passes Away at 75

Legendary heavyweight boxerJoe Bugner, a formidable presence in the ring for over three decades and a figure often shrouded in controversy, has died at the age of 75. The news was confirmed on Monday by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC), stating that Bugner passed away in his care home in Brisbane, Australia. His passing prompted tributes from across the boxing world, including promoter Frank Warren and former opponent Frank Bruno, both acknowledging his impactful career.
Born in Hungary, Bugner's family fled the communist regime in 1956 when he was just six years old, settling in the United Kingdom. Growing up in Cambridgeshire, he initially excelled as a junior national discus champion before turning to boxing. After losing his professional debut in 1967, Bugner quickly found his stride, winning his next 18 bouts.

At the young age of 21 in 1971, he achieved significant acclaim by defeating the much-loved Henry Cooper to claim the British, Commonwealth, and European heavyweight crowns. However, Bugner later expressed regret over this victory, stating, “I never wanted to be the man who ended Henry’s career. I had no idea that was to be his last fight. My biggest regret is that I took the opportunity away from Henry to finish at the top.”
Bugner's career was defined by his encounters with some of boxing's greatest names. He notably faced Muhammad Alitwice, going the full distance on both occasions. The first was a 12-round bout in 1973, followed by a grueling 15-round contest for the heavyweight world title in the intense heat ofKuala Lumpurin 1975 both ending in points losses for Bugner.
He also endured 12 rounds against Joe Frazier in 1973. Despite his ability to withstand punishment from the sport's titans, Bugner's defensive style often drew criticism. This cautious approach, however, had a tragic root: an early opponent, Ulric Regis, died from a brain injury after their fight, a memory that made Bugner “a bit more cautious when throwing punches.”
