Tragic Farm Accident Claims Life of Durham Teen, 14, as Tributes Pour In

A 14-year-old boy, Aaron Anderson from Consett, County Durham, tragically died on Boxing Day after sustaining life-threatening injuries in a collision on a farm in Burnopfield on the evening of December 21. The incident involved a John Deere Gator, an off-road utility vehicle larger than a quad bike but smaller than a tractor, which overturned. Aaron was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle following the collision but sadly succumbed to his injuries days later.
Aaron's devastated family paid a heartfelt tribute to him, remembering him as a "cheeky chappie who was always smiling and would never fail to brighten up your day." They described him as a much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family shared that Aaron was happiest working on farms and fixing trucks, possessing an amazing work ethic even at 14, and had already secured two apprenticeship offers. "Although we are saddened about the life he will never have, we are so thankful for the life he has lived and will cherish all the happy memories he left us with," they stated.
A 13-year-old boy also sustained serious injuries in the same incident and was treated in hospital, but is now recovering at home. Police were called to the farm at 8:25 PM on December 21. Durham Constabulary's Road Policing Inspector Mick Todd previously described it as a "horrific incident" and extended thoughts to the families affected.
Aaron's family expressed immense gratitude for the overwhelming support received from friends, family, and the local community. They also extended thanks to the ambulance service, police, and especially the dedicated staff at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the charities that provided comfort during this difficult time. Their thoughts and well wishes are also with everyone else affected by the tragic incident, and they have requested privacy to grieve the loss of their son.
The North East Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to an incident on a private road in Burnopfield shortly after 8:20 PM on December 21, dispatching three double-crewed ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team vehicle, a clinical team leader, and a specialist paramedic. Two patients were transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision. Officers are appealing to anyone who may have information that could assist their inquiry to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit by emailing [email protected] or by calling 101, quoting incident number 401 of December 21.
