Tragic End: Arise TV Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu Murdered in Home Invasion

Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old esteemed anchor, producer, and reporter for Arise News, tragically lost her life in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025. Her untimely death occurred following a brutal armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe District of Abuja, sending shockwaves through the Nigerian media industry and beyond.
Dr. Peter Mbah, the Governor of Enugu State, expressed his deep grief and profound shock over the incident. He unequivocally condemned the attack, describing it as "reprehensible and cowardly," and a heavy loss to Arise News and the entire Nigerian media. Governor Mbah extended his condolences to Maduagwu’s immediate family, the Arise News community, and the nation's media industry, urging security agencies to spare no effort in tracking down the culprits and ensuring they are brought to justice. He lauded Somtochukwu as a "consummate professional" who, even at 29, had already established herself significantly in the media landscape, lighting "millions of screens with her superb delivery," and lamented that a "shining light has been extinguished too soon."
The management and staff of ARISE News Channel officially announced her passing through a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi. The statement, titled "TRAGIC DEATH : SOMTOCHUKWU CHRISTELLE MADUAGWU," confirmed her birth on December 26, 1995, and her passing on September 29, 2025. It highlighted her roles as a News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, emphasizing her status as a "cherished member" of the Arise News family and a "vibrant voice" that connected with viewers. Beyond her broadcasting career, Maduagwu was also a qualified lawyer, known as a professional and supportive colleague and friend. The management extended its deepest condolences to her family and loved ones, reiterating a call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of those responsible for her death, stating, "Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory."
Further details emerged from Sani Yusuf, a neighbor who lived in the same block as Maduagwu in Katampe. Yusuf disclosed that he was the first victim attacked by the assailants during the robbery. Reacting to the tragedy, he shared his harrowing experience, stating, "I don't wish anyone the things I witnessed," and expressed his intention to share more details when ready, while praying for the souls of the departed.
Adding a poignant layer to the tragedy, it was revealed that just six weeks before the fatal attack, on August 14, Somtochukwu Maduagwu had posted a heartfelt prayer on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle. The former beauty queen wrote, “I pray from the depth of my heart that Nigeria never happens to me or anyone I care about.” This sentiment has taken on a chilling resonance in the wake of her violent death, underscoring the broader concerns about insecurity in the nation.
