Tragedy Strikes: Zimbabwe Bus Accident Claims 44 Lives, Nations Unite on Repatriation
A tragic DNC Coaches bus accident on South Africa's N1 highway, near Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, has claimed the lives of 44 individuals. The death toll rose to 44 after the latest victim succumbed to injuries while receiving hospital treatment. The catastrophic incident occurred late Saturday when the bus, en route from Port Elizabeth and East London to Harare, veered off the road and plunged down an embankment near Ingwe Lodge.
In response to the devastating crash, the governments of Zimbabwe and Malawi have jointly pledged to cover all repatriation and medical expenses for the victims. This commitment was announced during a critical meeting at Siloam Hospital, where the identification process for the deceased is actively underway. Zimbabwean diplomat Shepherd Gwenzi and Malawi's High Commissioner to South Africa, Stella Ndau, conveyed their governments' support to Limpopo provincial officials and the affected families present.
Shepherd Gwenzi, speaking on behalf of Zimbabwe, reiterated his government’s commitment to assisting the families of both the deceased and the injured. He confirmed that Zimbabwe would provide transport and accommodation until all necessary processes are concluded. Furthermore, Gwenzi emphasized the collaborative efforts with the South African government and the Malawian High Commissioner to expedite the repatriation of the deceased for burial in their respective home countries.
Preliminary investigations into the accident have revealed alarming details regarding its cause. Findings suggest that the DNC Coaches bus experienced brake failure, compounded by severe overloading. The vehicle, designed for a 62-seater capacity, was reportedly carrying 91 passengers at the time of the crash, including both Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals. This tragic combination of mechanical failure and excess capacity is believed to have significantly contributed to the high casualty count.
