Tragedy Strikes: Sports World Mourns Sudden Passing of Tennis Federation President Akindoju

The Nigerian sports community is mourning the loss of Engr. Ifedayo Akindoju, the esteemed President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), who passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2025, in Abuja. His demise has been described as a monumental blow to the nation's sports family, with many anticipating that the void left by his absence will be felt for an extended period.
Hon. Bukola Olopade, the director-general of the National Sports Commission (NSC), expressed profound grief and sorrow upon receiving the news. In a press statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Kola Daniel, Hon. Olopade lauded the late tennis president as a true gentleman whose unwavering, selfless leadership was instrumental in fostering consistent growth and development within Nigerian tennis.
Reflecting on his last interaction with Engr. Akindoju, Hon. Olopade shared his disbelief, stating, “I am still pinching myself not to believe that Engr. Akindoju is no more because of how full of life he was the last time he came to my office. This is a big loss to the tennis family and the country in general.” He further emphasized Akindoju's remarkable dedication, noting, “When you see Engr. Akindoju, you see his selfless passion for Nigerian tennis and how he constantly thinks of how Nigeria can produce the next generation of tennis top players.”
The Director-General of the NSC also reaffirmed the Commission's unwavering commitment to support Engr. Akindoju's bereaved family during their difficult time. He assured that the NSC would maintain constant communication with the family, offering every form of necessary assistance and solidarity.
