Tragedy Strikes: Missing Six-Year-Old Pupil Swept by Flood Found Dead in Awka
The body of six-year-old Success Ezenwafor, a UNIZIK Primary School pupil, was recovered on Wednesday after he was swept away by floodwaters in Awka, Anambra State. The tragic incident, which saw nine others rescued from a school shuttle, has left his family devastated and prompted local authorities to issue strong warnings about flood safety.
The tragic search for Success Ezenwafor, a six-year-old pupil of UNIZIK Primary School, Awka, Anambra State, concluded with the recovery of his body on Wednesday. The unfortunate event unfolded on Tuesday morning when Success was traveling in a shuttle bus with other schoolchildren along the Awka–Nibo–Nise–Enugwu-Ukwu Ring Road. The bus encountered heavy floodwaters, trapping its occupants. Initial reports indicated that nine people, including seven schoolchildren and two adults, were successfully rescued from the flood incident along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka. However, Success remained unaccounted for, leading the Anambra State Police Command, under the directive of Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama, to launch sustained search and rescue operations in collaboration with community members and other relevant stakeholders.
The recovery of Success Ezenwafor's body was confirmed on Wednesday by Prince Chinedu Okafor, who serves as both the Mayor and Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area. Dr. Uche Nworah, a former Special Adviser on General Duties to the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), also announced the sad development on Facebook, citing Okafor's confirmation. Okafor, who personally participated in the initial rescue efforts, expressed profound sadness over the loss and commiserated with the bereaved family. He further confirmed that the other eight children and two adults rescued from the incident were in stable condition and receiving medical attention at Amaku Teaching Hospital, responding well to treatment.
Heartbreaking details emerged regarding Success's final moments and his valiant efforts during the ordeal. According to Nworah, Success's father vividly recounted his son kissing him on both cheeks and saying goodbye before boarding the school shuttle on Tuesday, never to return home. Described as a brave boy, Success reportedly broke one of the vehicle's windows, creating an escape route that allowed some of the other occupants to get to safety. Tragically, despite his heroic actions, he could not make it to safety himself.
