Tragedy Strikes Kano: Two Lawmakers Die Simultaneously, Sparking Widespread Mourning

Kano State was plunged into a profound state of mourning following the tragic and near-simultaneous deaths of two serving members of its State House of Assembly on Wednesday. The lawmakers, Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, who represented Kano Municipal Local Government Area, and Hon. Aminu Sa’adu, representing Ungogo Local Government Area, both passed away within an hour of each other. Both were prominent members of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and their sudden demise caused visible shock and confusion among their colleagues and staff within the Assembly.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State expressed his profound shock and deep pain over the incident. In a statement released on Thursday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, Governor Yusuf described the twin deaths as a "dark and heartbreaking moment in the state’s history" and a "heartbreaking tragedy that words can hardly describe." He conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the leadership and members of the Assembly, and the people of Kano Municipal and Ungoggo Local Government Areas, noting that the entire state was plunged into collective grief.
The Governor further paid tribute to the deceased legislators, recognizing them as dedicated public servants, loyal politicians, and dependable voices for their constituents. He affirmed that their commitment to lawmaking and grassroots representation remained unquestionable, and their sudden departures have created a painful vacuum. Governor Yusuf prayed that Allah (SWT) forgives their shortcomings, envelops them in His infinite mercy, admits them into Aljannatul Firdaus, and grants their families and the entire people of Kano the strength to endure the monumental loss. He urged the people of the state to remain calm, united, and prayerful, viewing the tragedy as a test of faith and collective resilience.
The funeral rites for the late lawmakers proceeded in accordance with Islamic tradition. Hon. Aminu Sa’adu was buried on Wednesday evening at Ungoggo cemetery amid hundreds of party supporters. His colleague, Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, was laid to rest at approximately 10:40 AM on Thursday at Dandolo cemetery in the city centre, following Islamic funeral prayers conducted at the Central Mosque near the Emir’s Palace. Prominent personalities who attended Daneji’s funeral included Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, National leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, and other government functionaries.
Sources indicated that both lawmakers succumbed after brief illnesses. Hon. Sa’adu was reported to have attended a committee meeting at his office just hours before his passing, while Hon. Daneji, a close political ally of Governor Yusuf and former Chairman of the House Committee on Hajj, died in hospital after a protracted illness. In addition to the Governor, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased lawmakers, their constituents, and the Kano State Government, praying for their eternal repose and for strength for those grieving.
