Tragedy Strikes FUTA: Student Found Dead Amid Suicide Speculation

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) was plunged into mourning following the tragic discovery of the lifeless body of Favour Olaniyi, a 23-year-old 100-level student. Olaniyi, a male student from the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, was found dead inside a bush along the North Gate of the institution. The circumstances surrounding his death have fueled widespread speculation of suicide, especially after an empty bottle containing a substance suspected to be a lethal herbicide was reportedly recovered at the scene.
Following the grim discovery, students and residents in the vicinity gathered in clusters, struggling to come to terms with the tragic incident. Adegbenro Adebanjo, the Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol at FUTA, confirmed the incident, expressing the institution's profound sadness over the loss. He stated that the deceased's parents had been promptly informed. Adebanjo further detailed that upon notification, the university's security apparatus swiftly alerted the police, while medical officials from the institution, in coordination with security operatives, facilitated the evacuation of Olaniyi's body to the mortuary.
The university emphasized its full cooperation with police investigators in the ongoing inquiry. Furthermore, officials from FUTA's Students Affairs Division are actively providing counseling support to fellow students who may have been impacted by the tragedy. The division reiterated its long-standing commitment and readiness to offer support to students grappling with any issues, both on and off campus, encouraging them to utilize the available counseling and guidance services during difficult moments.
In response to inquiries, Abayomi Jimoh, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Command, confirmed that an investigation into the incident had commenced. He noted that detectives who visited the scene found no visible marks of violence on the deceased's body. Jimoh stated that the corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and further examination as investigations continue to ascertain the precise circumstances surrounding the incident. The Command also issued a public appeal, particularly to young people, urging them to seek support and counseling during challenging times to avoid actions that could endanger their lives.
