Tragedy Strikes Boxing World as Former Fighter Colon Dies from Past Brain Injury

Retired professional boxer Prichard Colon, a promising prospect whose career was tragically cut short by a traumatic brain injury, passed away on Thursday at the age of 33. His father, Richard Colon, confirmed his son's passing on social media, marking a somber end to a nearly decade-long struggle following a devastating injury sustained during a fight in 2015.

Colon, a native of Puerto Rico, suffered the life-altering brain injury during a welterweight bout against Terrel Williams in October 2015, which took place in Fairfax, Virginia. During the fight, Colon repeatedly complained about blows to the back of the head, and was knocked down once by such a blow. These severe injuries ultimately left him in a persistent vegetative state, requiring constant family care, a situation that was previously documented in an "Outside the Lines" report.

In a heartfelt message posted in Spanish on Facebook, Richard Colon expressed his sorrow: "Good morning, my people. I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from his earthly world. He is now in a better place. I did everything possible to fulfill his wish, his dream of bringing him on vacation to Puerto Rico as he so deeply wanted, but it could not be done."

At the time of his injury, Colon was just 23 years old and widely regarded as a bright talent in the boxing world. He boasted an impressive professional record of 16-0, with 13 of his victories coming by way of knockout, highlighting his potential to reach the sport's highest echelons.

Following his death, the boxing community paid tribute to the young fighter. Gustavo Olivieri, president of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), lauded Colon on X for his "courage, perseverance, and an extraordinary fighting spirit" in the years following his injury. Both the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the World Boxing Association (WBA) also issued statements on X, collectively calling Prichard Colon "a true warrior."

The circumstances surrounding Colon's injury were subject to an investigative report released in 2016 by the state of Virginia. The report concluded that "while Colon's medical condition following the contest against Williams is tragic, there is not one action so apparent and/or egregious to justify laying blame on one person." Despite this finding, Colon's parents subsequently filed a $50 million lawsuit in 2017, targeting the ringside doctor and promoters associated with the fateful fight, seeking accountability for the events that led to their son's irreversible condition.
