Tony Romo's 'Accidental' Taylor Swift 'Wife' Comment Fuels Kelce Romance Buzz

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS sports analyst Tony Romo, despite never reaching a Super Bowl during his 14-year NFL career, has continued to make headlines, this time for his broadcasting antics involving pop superstar Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Romo, known for his insightful yet sometimes playful commentary, repeatedly referred to Swift as Kelce’s “wife” during the 2023-2024 NFL season, more than a year and a half before the couple's engagement.
These 'slip-ups' garnered significant attention. During a Chiefs loss to the Buffalo Bills on December 10, 2023, Romo first made the remark. A week later, he repeated the comment during the Chiefs’ game against the Raiders, stating, “As you see, Kelce’s wife, Taylor Swift, in the audience,” before quickly correcting himself to “I’m sorry. Girlfriend!” Like many viewers, Romo’s co-host, veteran broadcaster Jim Nantz, questioned if Romo possessed inside information, but as it turned out, he did not.
In a new interview with SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up on Thursday, January 29, Romo, 45, clarified that his repeated references were not accidental but a deliberate jest. He recalled, “I did, kind of, play with the fans a little bit I think I was like, ‘And there’s…’ I think I said, ‘his wife.’ I did that on purpose and people were like, ‘Do you know something?’ I was like, ‘Nah, I just wanted to make you guys think for a second [and] just mess with you a little bit.’”
Following the start of Swift and Kelce’s relationship in 2023, the global pop sensation became a frequent presence at Chiefs games. Amidst her record-setting Eras Tour, cameras often cut to Swift in the Kelce family skybox, capturing her reactions to the game and the celebrities joining her, significantly boosting the network coverage's viewership and buzz.
Ultimately, Kelce and Swift officially announced their engagement on August 26, 2025, via a widely shared Instagram post. In the post, Taylor reportedly wrote, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” At the time of press, the couple had not yet disclosed a specific date or location for their upcoming wedding.
