The University of Oklahoma is set to honor the late Country Music Hall of Famer and devoted fan, Toby Keith, by naming an upcoming student athlete training facility the Toby Keith Family Performance Center. This significant dedication follows a substantial philanthropic commitment made by the Keith family to the university's esteemed baseball program, ensuring that Keith's profound impact and legacy will continue to be felt across the Norman, Oklahoma campus.
Construction on the new performance center is scheduled to commence in the coming months, with an anticipated completion date of 2028. The facility will be seamlessly integrated into the Kimrey Family Stadium, designed to serve as a state-of-the-art hub for student athletes. It is envisioned to offer premier resources for player development, comprehensive training, advanced sports performance initiatives, and a wide array of related team activities, thereby significantly enhancing the capabilities of Oklahoma's athletic programs.
Skip Johnson, the head baseball coach at the University of Oklahoma, expressed deep gratitude for this naming. "Naming this performance center in [Keith’s] honor is something that truly reflects his impact, and his legacy will continue to live on," Johnson stated, further highlighting Keith's transformative influence. He added that the facility "will further change the lives of future student athletes that step foot into the building." Tricia Covel, Keith's widow, speaking on behalf of the family, echoed these sentiments, conveying their pride in supporting the program and student athletes, and carrying forward "something Toby cared so deeply about." She concluded, "I know he would have loved being a part of it. We’re honored to help shape this next chapter and excited to see what the future holds for Oklahoma baseball.”
This ambitious project is also a crucial component of a larger $49 million renovation and expansion initiative for the Kimrey Family Stadium. This extensive upgrade aims to not only enhance the training environment for student athletes and coaches but also to elevate the overall experience for fans attending events.
