Tinubu Flags Off Akwanga–Maiduguri Super Highway to Boost Northern Connectivity
The Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Super Highway has been officially flagged off, marking a major infrastructure development under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration. This legacy project aims to foster economic growth, enhance national unity, and improve connectivity across several Nigerian geopolitical zones. Dignitaries emphasized its role in facilitating trade, reducing travel time, and creating jobs.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially flagged off the construction of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Super Highway, a major federal infrastructure project aimed at improving transportation and economic activity across northern Nigeria.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held in Akwanga, was performed on the President’s behalf by Nentawe Yilwatda and attended by governors, federal officials, and other dignitaries. The project forms part of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with the Federal Government also commencing work on the Gombe–Biu section of the corridor.
Speaking at the event, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya described the highway as a transformative project that will improve connectivity, reduce travel time, enhance security, and stimulate trade across multiple states.
Caleb Muftwang, representing the Northern States Governors’ Forum, said the road would unlock the region’s economic potential and strengthen integration with other parts of the country. Minister of Works, David Umahi, added that the highway would be built to modern engineering standards to improve logistics, lower transport costs, and facilitate the movement of agricultural and manufactured goods.
Ahead of the flag-off, Governor Inuwa Yahaya joined Abdullahi Sule for the commissioning of the newly completed 600-metre Akwanga Underpass and dualised township roads in Nasarawa State.
He praised the projects as evidence of sustained investment in critical infrastructure and commended the state government's commitment to improving mobility and economic development. The super highway is expected to become one of Nigeria’s largest road infrastructure projects, linking key commercial centres across the North-East and North-Central regions.
