Tinubu Unveils Mega Super Highway Project Spanning Multiple States

The Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri Super Highway project was officially flagged off on Wednesday in Akwanga by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, acting on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This significant groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the Governor of Gombe State and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, among other dignitaries. The Federal Government had recently also flagged off the Gombe-Biu section of this same strategic transport corridor, underscoring its commitment to accelerating work on the highway.

Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda highlighted that the super highway aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and his dedication to constructing lasting infrastructure that will stimulate economic growth, foster national unity, and enhance the quality of life for Nigerians. He emphasized the administration's focus on delivering projects with substantial socio-economic impact across all regions of the country.

Speaking at the event, Governor Inuwa Yahaya commended President Tinubu's prioritization of infrastructure as a key driver for national development. He described the super highway as a legacy project poised to accelerate economic activities, promote social cohesion, and boost Nigeria’s unity through improved connectivity. Governor Yahaya further elaborated that the project's significance extends beyond providing a modern road network, as it will facilitate trade, reduce travel time, enhance security, create jobs, and connect markets, businesses, and communities across several geopolitical zones.

On behalf of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State expressed profound appreciation for the President’s commitment to equitable development. He conveyed confidence that the project would emerge as one of the defining achievements of the Tinubu administration, calling the super highway one of the most consequential infrastructure investments in Nigeria’s recent history. Governor Muftwang asserted that the project represents a bold stride towards unlocking the immense economic potential of Northern Nigeria while simultaneously strengthening links with other parts of the country.

Earlier, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, provided a detailed overview of the project. He assured Nigerians that the road would be constructed to the highest engineering standards by competent and reputable contractors with a proven track record in executing large-scale projects. Engr. Umahi explained that the super highway is specifically designed to improve logistics, streamline the movement of agricultural produce and manufactured goods, reduce transportation costs, and open up new economic frontiers along its extensive corridor.

Prior to the flag-off ceremony, Governor Inuwa Yahaya joined his Nasarawa State counterpart, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, for the commissioning of the newly completed 600-metre Akwanga Underpass and dualized township roads in Akwanga. Governor Yahaya congratulated Governor Sule on the successful completion of these projects, commending his administration’s dedication to infrastructure development and recognizing that these initiatives reflect prudent leadership and a deliberate effort to improve the quality of life for the people of Nasarawa State. Governor Inuwa Yahaya was accompanied on his visit to Nasarawa State by a delegation that included the Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo; the APC Governorship Candidate, Dr. Jamilu Isiyaku Gwamna; members of the National and State Assembly, Hon. Ali Isa JC and Hon. Ali Baba Manu; Federal Permanent Secretary, Dr. Usman Kalba; Executive Director, NDPHC, Engr. Bello Babayo Bello; former Reps member, Hon. Umar Ahmed Sulaiman Nafada; and Commissioner-nominee, Muhammadu Gambo Magaji, among others.
