Tinubu's Diplomatic Shake-Up: FFK and Omokri Among 65 New Ambassadors Posted
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially approved the postings of 65 ambassadors, comprising 31 career and 34 non-career diplomats, to various countries and the United Nations. The announcement, confirmed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), on Friday, March 6, follows the Senate's confirmation of the ambassadors-designate last December. These appointments aim to fill diplomatic vacancies that have persisted since the recall of previous envoys shortly after President Tinubu assumed office in 2023.
Among the non-career ambassadors, several prominent political figures and notable personalities have been assigned to key diplomatic missions globally. These include: Senator Grace Bent to Lome-Togo, Sen. Ita Enang to South Africa, Ikpeazu Victor to Spain, Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu to Tel-Aviv, Israel, and former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmud Yakubu to Qatar. Paul Oga Adikwu has been posted to The Vatican City Holy See, while Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas will represent Nigeria in The Philippines. Controversial former presidential aide Mr. Reno Omokri has been posted to Mexico City, Mexico, and Hon. (Engr.) Abasi Braimah to Budapest, Hungary. Mrs. Erelu Angela Adebayo is assigned to Portugal, Barr. Olumilua Oluwayimika Ayotunwa to Tokyo, Japan, and Rt. Hon. Ugwuanyi Ifeanyi Lawrence to Athens, Greece. Barr. Chioma Priscilla Ohakim will serve in Warsaw, Poland. Aminu Dalhatu is the High Commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom, for whom the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already received agrément. Former Interior Minister Lt. Gen Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau is posted to Beijing, China, Hon. Tasiu Musa Maigari to Gambia, and former Lagos Deputy Governor Olufemi Pedro to Australia. Barr. Muhammed Ubandoma Aliyu is assigned to Argentina, Lateef Kayode Are to the USA, and Amb. Joseph Sola Iji to Russia. Businessman-politician Sen. Jimoh Ibrahim has been named Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani Kayode will serve in Germany, former Minister of Health Prof. Isaak Folorunso Adewole in Ottawa, Canada, and Ajimobi Fatima Florence (F) in Austria. Mrs. Lola Akande (F) is assigned to Sweden, and former National Intelligence Agency boss Ayodele Oke to France, with France also having granted agrément for his posting. Other non-career ambassadors include Yakubu N. Gambo to Saudi Arabia, Senator Prof. Nora Ladi Daduut to Seoul, South Korea, Barr. Onueze Chukwujika Joe Okocha SAN to Dublin, Dr. Kulu Haruna Abubakar to Tunis, Tunisia, and Rt. Hon. Jerry Samuel Manwe to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
The 31 career ambassadors have also received new assignments to a broad range of countries, strengthening Nigeria's diplomatic presence globally. Their postings include: Amb. Nwaobiola Ezenwa Chukwumeka to Cote D’Ivoire, Besto Maimuna Ibrahim to Niamey-Niger, Monica Okwuchukwu Enebechi to Sao Tome and Principe (STP), Amb. Mohammed Mahmud Lele to Algiers-Algeria, Endoni Syndoph Paebi to Ouagadougou-Burkina Faso, and Ahmed Mohammed Monguno to Cairo, Egypt. Amb. Jane Adams (nee Okon) Michael (F) is posted to Kingston-Jamaica, Amb. Clark-Omeru Alexandra (F) to Lusaka-Zambia, Chima Geoggrey Lioma David to Bamako-Mali, and Amb. Odumah Yvonne Ehinosen to Malabo – Equatorial Guinea. Amb. Wasa Segun Ige is assigned to Beirut, Lebanon, Ruben Abimbola Samuel (F) to Rome, Italy, Amb. Onaga Ogechukwu Kingsley to Maputo, Mozambique, and Amb. Magaji Umar to Kinsasha, DR Congo. Amb. Muhammad Saidu Dahiru is posted to New Delhi-India, Amb. Abdussalam Habu Zayyad to Dakar-Senegal, Amb. Shehu Ilu Barde to Accra, Ghana, and Amb. Aminu Nasir to Ethiopia. Abubakar Musa Musa is assigned to N’Djamena, Chad, Amb. Haidara Mohammed Idris to The Hague-Netherlands, Amb. Bako Adamu Umar to Rabat-Morocco, and Amb. Sulu Gambari Olatunji Ahmed to Malaysia. Amb. Romata Mohammed Omobolanle (F) is posted to Tanzania, Amb. Shaga John Shamah to Botswana, Salau, Hamza Mohammed to Tehran, Iran, and Amb. Ibrahim Danlami to Kenya. Ibrahim Adeola Mopelola (F) is assigned to Cotonou-Benin, Amb. Ayeni Adebayo Emmanuel to Brussels, Belgium, Amb. Akande Wahab Adekola to Berne-Switzerland, and Amb. Arewa (nee Adedokun) Esther (F) to Windhoek-Namibia. Finally, Amb. Gergadi Joseph John is posted to Libreville-Gabon, Amb. Luther Ogbomode Ayo-Kalata (F) to Sierra Leone, Danladi Yakubu Nyaku to Khartoum-Sudan, and Bello Dogon-Daji Haliru to Bangkok, Thailand.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the receipt of agrément from the United Kingdom for High Commissioner-designate Aminu Dalhatu and from France for Ambassador Ayo Oke. The Ministry has also formally conveyed the nominations of the remaining 62 designated envoys to all concerned countries, requesting their agréments in line with established international diplomatic practice. To facilitate their immediate deployment, President Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promptly commence an induction program for all the ambassadors-designate and High Commissioners.
