Tinubu Responds to Oyo Kidnappings: Ribadu and Gbajabiamila Dispatched to Crisis-Hit Communities
A presidential delegation has arrived in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, ahead of a visit to communities affected by the abduction of 46 pupils and teachers by armed men on May 15.
Daily Trust reports that concerns continue to mount over the safety of the victims who were abducted from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, armed attackers on motorcycles invaded schools, abducting dozens of pupils and staff before fleeing into nearby forests. Among the victims was two-year-old Christianah Akanbi, while a teacher was killed during the attack.
Days later, videos surfaced showing some abductees, including principal Rachael Alamu and a nursing mother, appealing for help from captivity.
Tension further intensified with the distressing report that one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was killed while in captivity.
This development has profoundly heightened fears among the victims' relatives and the wider community, sparking outrage among parents, community leaders, civil society groups, and religious organizations.
These groups have collectively urged security agencies to redouble their efforts to secure the release of those still held captive.
In response to the crisis, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde visited the affected communities on Saturday, assuring families that active efforts were being made to secure their loved ones' release.
The governor emphasized his personal commitment, stating, “Please believe in me. I have not been sleeping well myself.
Together with the service commanders, we meet twice every day, once in the morning and once at night, sometimes until 10 or 11 p.m.”
The federal government has also mobilized, with President Bola Tinubu dispatching a high-powered delegation to Ogbomoso on Sunday.
The delegation, led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, includes the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Inspector-General of Police, Tunde Disu; the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa; the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe; and the President’s Special Adviser on Public Communications, Sunday Dare.
The team is tasked with visiting the affected communities and engaging with local stakeholders as part of ongoing efforts to resolve the situation.
Sunday Dare confirmed via a post on X that President Tinubu has activated coordinated measures aimed at securing the victims' release and ensuring the apprehension of those responsible for the heinous attack.
He reiterated the President’s directive to security agencies to intensify rescue operations and bring the perpetrators to justice, underscoring the government's commitment to addressing this severe security challenge.
