President Bola Tinubu has announced the death of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, at about 4:30 pm after a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s death and revealed that he has spoken with the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, to offer his condolences.

As part of immediate state protocols, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.

Buhari served as the country’s president from 2015 to 2023 and earlier as military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.

To honour the late leader, Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect.
