TikTok Unleashes STEM Power: New Educational Feed for Sub-Saharan Africa

Popular video content platform TikTok has officially launched its dedicated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) feed across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Unveiled in November 2024, this specialized hub curates and offers vetted science, technology, engineering, and math content to users, much like the platform's 'For You' and 'Friends' feeds. The STEM feed is currently accessible in over 20 countries throughout SSA, allowing users to easily navigate to a wealth of knowledge from respected experts in their respective fields, positioned alongside the familiar 'For You' feed.
The introduction of the STEM feed in SSA follows its significant success in other regions. According to TikTok, 25% of teenagers in the UK, Ireland, the US, and Canada visit the STEM feed weekly. Building on this widespread positive reception, TikTok has announced that the STEM feed will now be activated by default for all users as part of its global expansion. This global rollout will also see the feed incorporating additional languages, beginning with European languages such as French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Arabic, further broadening its reach and accessibility.
TikTok is enjoyed by over a billion users worldwide, many of whom are inherently curious and seek to expand their knowledge on a diverse array of subjects, ranging from social issues and art to education. The platform has a proven track record of fostering intellectual communities, evident in initiatives like #BookTok, which boasts 47 million video creations from avid readers, and #LearnOnTikTok, a vibrant hub of interesting facts, optimization tips, and niche educational content. Boniswa Sidwaba, Head of Content Operations for Sub-Saharan Africa at TikTok, emphasized this aspect, stating, “TikTok is home to more than entertainment. It’s a platform where users flock to make discoveries; whether it’s uncovering a new restaurant, listening to a new artist for the first time or learning a new language. #STEMTok expands the world of discovery for our users whilst educating them with enriching content.”
The launch of the STEM feed has already spurred a remarkable 18 percent increase in STEM-related content on the platform, with almost 10 million STEM-related videos published globally in the last three years. To ensure the quality and reliability of the content, all videos featured on the STEM feed undergo a rigorous approval process. Common Sense Networks assesses each video for age-appropriateness, while The Poynter Institute for Media Studies verifies its factual accuracy and overall reliability. This vetting process provides reassurance to parents and guardians, confirming that TikTok offers more than just fleeting dance trends and popular songs, but also a valuable educational resource.
With teenagers constituting 25% of TikTok’s global user base, the platform possesses immense potential to influence and inspire an entire generation. Through the STEM feed, young users can deepen their understanding of complex topics such such as the nature of bacteria, planetary science, astrophysics, the intricate inner workings of technology, and advanced robotics. The initiative empowers them to be part of a community united by shared educational interests and a desire for knowledge.
