The President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Dwumfuor, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to take immediate action on reported attacks against journalists.

Speaking during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2025, the GJA President urged the IGP to ensure justice for cases of attacks on journalists including the unsolved murder of Ahmed Suale in 2019.

“We have not been silent on the attacks against our members which is why we continue to demand justice for our murdered colleague, Ahmed Suale. We reiterate our call to the IGP, the time to act is now,” he stated.

The event, organized under the Newsroom Business Initiative by Afrimas Network in collaboration with Bluecrest College, celebrated World Press Freedom Day 2025.

Observed on May 3, 2025, the day honors the fundamental principles of press freedom, assesses its global state, defends media independence and pays tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Held under the theme “Freedom of Expression in the Face of the AI Revolution”, the event brought together various stakeholders in the media industry.

The event also featured the presentation of awards to distinguished media practitioners to celebrate their work and efforts.

Ghana is often regarded as having one of Africa's strongest press freedom environments, rooted in its 1992 Constitution (Article 21) which guarantees freedom of expression and media independence.

The country repealed criminal libel laws in 2001, a significant step toward protecting journalists.

Despite efforts to promote press freedom, several journalists and media outlets have faced various forms of attacks, economic pressures, legal threats and harassment in the execution of their duties over the years.
