An inner look at the Nkofieho cave

Before warriors march to battle, they often retreat into hiding to fortify themselves, ensuring they face their opponents head-on and return home victorious.

In this episode of People and Places on GhanaWeb TV, we place the spotlight on the warriors of Kwahu Twenerase.

According to history, as narrated by the tour guide at Nkofieho Cave, Frimpong Emmanuel Otchere, these warriors hid inside the cave to prepare special medicines that would strengthen them before heading into battle.

These medicines were sprinkled on warriors and anyone present — instantly charging them for war.

Even those not originally selected to fight would long to join the battle after being touched by the medicine.

And these warriors were always victorious whenever they went to war.

“They migrated from Adansi in the Ashanti Region between 1630 and 1660. When they arrived, this place became their hideout. Whenever they prepared for battle, they would come here first, fortify themselves, and then head into war.

“In Akan, they would say 'yerenoaoko' — meaning 'we are cooking war'. They prepared war medicine inside the cave, and upon exiting, they sprinkled it on anyone they saw. Once touched by the medicine, they became fully charged for battle and eager to join the fight,” he added.

According to history, the warriors of Twenerase were undefeated in battle and even assisted the Ashanti in multiple wars, including the Krepi War.

The cave did more than just offering a refuge; it became the secret weapon behind Twenerase's unwavering strength and battlefield success.
