Pan American World Airways, widely known as Pan Am, is making a significant return to the African continent, heralding a new era of luxurious jet-set adventures that seamlessly blend air travel with immersive safari experiences. This re-entry is marked by the launch of the exclusive “Sky to Safari” experience, a flagship offering within the airline’s Private Jet Journeys Collection. Craig Carter, CEO of Pan American World Airways, emphasized that this initiative is about “reimagining the golden age of travel for the modern explorer,” identifying Africa as the ideal setting for such a grand vision. The airline has forged a strategic partnership with SafariScapes, a boutique luxury safari agency renowned for its expertise in crafting authentic African adventures.
Scheduled to commence in the summer of 2027, the “Sky to Safari” journey promises an ultra-exclusive 18-night African odyssey, limited to just 42 guests. This meticulously curated expedition will span four diverse and iconic countries: Tanzania, where guests can witness lions roaming the Serengeti; Zimbabwe, home to the thunderous Victoria Falls; Botswana, offering explorations of the richly biodiverse Okavango Delta; and South Africa, featuring a luxurious ride aboard the famed Rovos Rail through its stunning landscapes. The experience is designed to provide a comprehensive and refined adventure, encompassing luxury in the sky, within the bush, and on the rails, ensuring a safari experience unlike any other.
Both Pan Am and SafariScapes are committed to creating a journey that honors travel's legacy while embracing Africa's untamed beauty. Debbie Frazier, CEO of SafariScapes, articulated this vision, stating, “This isn’t just a safari. It’s a celebration of travel’s legacy, designed for those who believe the journey should be as extraordinary as the destination.” She further highlighted that the trip is not only an exploration of Africa’s wild beauty but also “a journey through time, back to the golden age of travel when elegance, discovery, and impeccable service defined every adventure.” Carter echoed this sentiment, underscoring the venture’s aim to connect the elegance and legacy of Pan Am with the heart, authenticity, and adventure of Africa.
Pan Am’s history with Africa is deep-rooted, tracing back to 1941 when its subsidiary, Pan American–Africa (PAA Africa), played a crucial role in flying support missions for Allied forces during World War II, with regular service to the continent commencing in 1946. This upcoming “Sky to Safari” therefore marks the airline’s first return to Africa since 1991, signifying a profound reconnection with its historical routes. This announcement is also part of Pan Am’s broader strategic efforts to redefine modern air travel, which includes other significant projects such as the upcoming Pan Am Hotel by Hilton in Los Angeles, slated for a spring 2026 opening, and a month-long voyage in October 2027 aboard Holland America’s Zuiderdam, which will retrace Pan Am’s legendary Clipper routes across the Caribbean and Latin America.
