The Farce Awakens: Rick Moranis Returns to 'Spaceballs 2,' Cast & Villains Revealed!

A disturbance in the Schwartz has officially confirmed the long-awaited sequel, Spaceballs 2, which is now in production with a target release in 2027. Mel Brooks's iconic Star Wars parody is bringing back a host of familiar faces, most notably Rick Moranis, who is ending his decades-long hiatus from live-action acting to reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet. Moranis last appeared in a live-action film in 1997 and took a break from acting after his wife's passing in 1991, though he has lent his voice to characters since then.
Alongside Moranis, original stars Bill Pullman will return as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz, the Grand Moff Tarkin to Dark Helmet's Darth Vader. Comedy legend Mel Brooks, who directed and co-wrote the original and helped conceive the story for the sequel, will also be back as Yogurt and will serve as a producer. The announcement was accompanied by a photo of the team gathered for a table read, indicating that production is well underway, with Josh Gad previously confirming he was flying to Australia to begin shooting.
Newcomers joining the goofy intergalactic adventure include Anthony Carrigan in an unknown role, Keke Palmer, and Lewis Pullman, who is confirmed to play the son of Lone Starr and Queen Vespa, setting up an exploration of a new generation of characters. Josh Gad, who is also a co-writer, rounds out the new cast. The creative reins have been handed to Josh Greenbaum, known for his comedic work on Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar and Will & Harper, as director. He will be working from a script co-written by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez, who also have notable writing credits like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, Amazon MGM Studios humorously stated that 'the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.' A prior logline, laced with Brooks-esque humor, described it as a 'non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two but with reboot elements franchise expansion film.' The writing team has hinted that they will largely draw material from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but noted that 'anything that has happened since the original Spaceballs is fair game,' promising other scattershot sci-fi references.
The original Spaceballs concluded with Spaceball I destroyed, sending Dark Helmet, Colonel Sandurz, and President Skroob crashing onto the Planet of the Apes. Lone Starr, having confirmed his lineage as a prince, was permitted to marry Princess Vespa, providing a happy ending. The sequel, long bandied about in the shadow of new Star Wars content, aims to recapture the magic and continue 'The Search for More Money.' Producing the film alongside Brooks, Gad, and Greenbaum are Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody, as well as Kevin Salter. Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez are serving as executive producers.
