Hollywood iconic film The Devil Wears Prada, which released in 2006, is getting its sequel after almost two decades. The original film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling novel of the same name, starred Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and Stanley Tucci, among others. The production of The Devil Wears Prada 2, has officially started.
Disney's 20th Century Studios, on Monday (June 30), sharing the announcement on social media, wrote, "The Devil Wears Prada 2. Now in production". The short clip featured a pair of devilish red silhouettes.
In addition to Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and Stanley Tucci, the new face to join the sequel is Kenneth Branagh, who will play Miranda Presley's (Streep) husband. Streep played the no-nonsense editor-in-chief of Runway magazine in the prequel.
The Devil Wears Prada revolves around an aspiring journalist Andy Sachs (Hathaway) who is hired at the high-end fashion magazine and shares a complex relationship with her terrifying editor. The plot details for the sequel are still under wraps, but as per reports, the story follows Miranda Priestly facing challenges as she navigates her career amid the collapse of her magazine. She faces new rival in Blunt’s character, who was her assistant in the first part. Blunt's Emily Charlton is now a renowned executive for a luxury advertising group, for which Priestly is behind for advertising dollars.
Nothing much is known about Hathaway's Andy Sachs character as how she will contribute to the narrative. At the end of the first film, she was seen walking away from Runway and works in a newspaper.
Earlier, in an interview with E! News, the actress said, "I think that she is writing for a wonderful French women's magazine," and added, "I think she's a staff writer and she speaks French fluently. I don't think she's married, but she might have a child or two. I think she's pretty fab."
David Frankel and Aline Brosh McKenna, who directed and wrote the original film, have returned for the sequel. Karen Rosenfelt is also back as the producer.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 will hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
