The CNES lands on Fortnite with the Amazonia mission to protect the planet

Published 2 months ago2 minute read

During the game, the player will be required to use indicators derived from satellite data. These data are directly inspired by the Space for Climate Observatory (SCO), an international alliance created at CNES's initiative. The mission of the SCO? Use space data and produce indicators to assess, anticipate, and respond to climate changes.

Several satellite data provided to the player are directly inspired by tools developed by the SCO such as those from ALEOFEU, which are used to prevent and fight forest fires in the Aude, or those from Chove-Chuva to provide indicators on land use in Brazil (forests, agriculture, water resources); those from OpHySe to monitor the state of rivers in real-time and help with navigability in French Guiana; those from Stock Water to monitor hydroelectric dams in Brazil and finally the data provided by TropiSCO to track deforestation in real-time in South America, Africa, and Asia.

This is not the first time that CNES develops "playgrounds" from the space universe: role-playing games on Twitch, mobile games on space debris, challenges on the Kerbal simulator... So many new channels that allow the popularization of space and especially to reach young audiences.

The experience "Amazonia: space to the rescue" is available for free on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch.
