Move over Liam Neeson, your particular set of skills are no longer required, as a new action hero parent has arrived. Bodyguard and Spooks star Keeley Hawes is now picking up arms to protect herself and her son from becoming the targets in a new Prime Video action thriller series. And the first trailer and release details have now been revealed.
Coming courtesy of writing duo Harry and Jack Williams, who are best known for their work on the acclaimed psychological drama The Missing and the hit thriller series The Tourist starring Jamie Dornan, The Assassin follows a mother, Julie, who attempts to reconnect with her estranged son, Edward (played by Freddie Highmore). However, when the retired killer’s dangerous past catches up with her, she must once again – say it together – use her particular set of skills to keep them safe.

Led by Keeley Hawes (Scoop, Miss Austen) and Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor, Bates Motel), the rest of The Assassin’s cast includes Gina Gershon (Riverdale, New Amsterdam), Shalom Brune-Franklin (The Tourist, Baby Reindeer), Jack Davenport (The Morning Show, Pirates of the Caribbean), Alan Dale (Dynasty, Lost), Gerald Kyd (The Swarm, The Split), Devon Terrell (Totally Completely Fine, Cursed), Richard Dormer (Blue Lights, Game of Thrones), and David Dencik (The Ipcress File, No Time to Die).
Writer Jack Williams has teased what's to come in The Assassin, and it sounds like much more than merely another action thriller show. Speaking with Empire, Williams revealed how the show will standout from "the hitman genre," citing Eddie Redmayne's The Day Of The Jackal as a recent example of the "very serious, very sensible" approach that The Assassin will try to differentiate itself from. Even likening it to one of the best hitman comedies ever made, the John Cusack-led Grosse Pointe Blank.
"There are so many projects in the hitman genre, and they've been increasingly treated with a lot of reverence. But, if anything, The Assassin is closer to something like Grosse Pointe Blank in the irreverent way it treats the job."
