Construction CEO Advocates Private Sector Role in 24-Hour Economy

Published 6 hours ago2 minute read

Emmanuel Cherry, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, recently highlighted the crucial role of private sector integration in the successful implementation of Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy Initiative. Speaking at the Ghana Investment and Trade Week 2025 summit, held in Accra from July 2-4 under the theme “Constructing Prosperity,” Cherry unequivocally stated, “This vision requires joint government-private execution.” His remarks, documented in official conference transcripts, underscored the necessity of a collaborative approach between public and private entities to realize the initiative’s full potential.

Cherry identified several pressing issues demanding immediate attention within Ghana's developmental framework. A significant concern raised was the nation's severe housing deficit, which currently exceeds 1.8 million units. To tackle this, he strongly recommended comprehensive reforms to existing pension schemes, proposing that such changes could facilitate the construction of an impressive 250,000 housing units annually. Furthermore, he drew attention to pervasive transportation inefficiencies that adversely affect agricultural distribution networks and, consequently, consumer pricing. To mitigate these challenges, Cherry advocated for phased infrastructure upgrades, suggesting that these improvements should commence in urban centers before extending nationwide.

These strategic measures, as articulated by Cherry, are integral components of the current administration’s broader “Big Push” industrialization agenda. He also noted that the summit provided a platform for robust discussions involving international investors, who were actively assessing opportunities within Ghana’s burgeoning infrastructure sector. This engagement with global stakeholders further emphasizes the government's commitment to attracting foreign investment and expertise to drive national development, aligning with the overarching objectives of the 24-Hour Economy Initiative and the 'Big Push' agenda.
