NPP MP Disputes Mahama's Economic Management Characterization

Published 4 hours ago2 minute read

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the Member of Parliament for Akyem Swedru, has publicly challenged President John Mahama's recent assertions regarding the economic management of the previous administration. Osei's rebuttal specifically focuses on the nation’s gold reserves, leveraging official data from the Bank of Ghana to support his counter-argument.

According to the detailed records cited by MP Osei, Ghana's gold reserves witnessed a significant increase under the Akufo-Addo government. The data indicates a notable progression from 8.78 tonnes in May 2023 to a substantial 30.53 tonnes by December 2024. This upward trend in gold reserves forms a central pillar of Osei's argument against the President's critique.

Further elaborating on the continuity of this positive trend, Osei highlighted in a verified social media statement that the current administration has also contributed to the reserves, adding 2.46 tonnes within its initial six months in office. Based on these figures, the legislator firmly stated, “This progression merits acknowledgment rather than condemnation,” directly refuting President Mahama’s characterization of the economy as “criminally mismanaged” during his recent policy addresses.

Osei did not stop at defending the past administration's record but also posed critical questions concerning the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration. He specifically queried the proportion of gold reserves that have been maintained domestically versus those sold internationally under their watch. These remarks underscore ongoing parliamentary debates concerning economic stewardship within Ghana’s constitutional governance framework.
