Thailand is grappling with a complex and multifaceted border dispute with Cambodia, characterized by escalating diplomatic tensions, military-related concerns, and a significant spread of disinformation. Recent events have brought these challenges into sharp focus, including serious allegations of assassination plots and persistent concerns regarding ceasefire violations.

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has vehemently rejected claims circulating on social media, initially cited by Cambodia’s Minister of Information, which alleged that Thailand was planning to assassinate Cambodian leaders Hun Sen and Hun Manet. These accusations were deemed by Nikorndej Balankura, Director-General of the Department of Information, as entirely unfounded and explicitly intended to defame Thailand. He emphasized that spreading such false news during ongoing General Border Committee (GBC) discussions undermines the spirit of dialogue and serves no constructive purpose. This incident is part of a broader issue of misinformation, with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society reporting that eight out of the top ten fake news items in a recent week concerned the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, highlighting the pervasive nature of disinformation in the dispute.
