Texas A&M Basketball Chasing NCAA No. 1 Seed Ahead of Closing Gauntlet

Published 3 weeks ago3 minute read

After having its five-game winning streak snapped against No. 21 Mississippi State, No. 7 Texas A&M men’s basketball is still in position for a high seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

The Aggies earned the No. 6 overall seed in the selection committee’s top 16 preview, which put them in position to be the No. 2 seed in the South Region. While Texas A&M struggled in Starkville, a Quadrant 1 road loss is unlikely to drop the Aggies too far in the seed list.

Texas A&M’s upcoming schedule presents them with multiple opportunities to stay in the hunt for a No. 1 seed and improve their resume. The Aggies close the regular season with a brutal five-game stretch, which starts in College Station on Saturday against No. 6 Tennessee. The Aggies will face two more stiff tests at No. 2 Florida and against No. 1 Auburn. The closing stretch also includes a home date against bubble team Vanderbilt and a road season finale at LSU.

This stretch of games, especially the contests against Tennessee, Florida and Auburn, will give Texas A&M an opportunity to improve their result-based and predictive metrics. The selection committee uses both metrics to determine selection and seeding, and wins against teams ranked higher often give teams a big boost in those areas.

The Aggies have strong result-based metrics, as they have an average national rank of 7.7 in the three categories, including ranking sixth nationally in the Wins Above Bubble metric. Texas A&M’s predictive metrics are much weaker with an average rank of 19.3, due to a mediocre scoring margin and lower efficiency numbers. This is likely what kept the Aggies from a No. 1 seed in the committee’s preview.

Texas A&M’s five remaining games are all against teams Quadrants 1 and 2, which gives them a chance to boost their metrics. In order to maintain their position as a No. 2 seed, the Aggies likely need to handle business against Vanderbilt and LSU, at minimum. Adding wins against fellow No. 1 seed contenders Tennessee and Florida would give Texas A&M an edge for the final top seed. If the Aggies win all five games, they would be in prime position for a No. 1 Seed entering the SEC Tournament in Nashville.

The backcourt duo of graduate Wade Taylor IV and senior Zhuric Phelps will be crucial in determining the Aggies’ postseason seeding. Taylor and Phelps are both averaging over 14 points per game this season. The guards struggled from the field against Mississippi State, shooting a combined 9-25. More efficient performances from the duo down the stretch would give the Aggies a much-needed boost as they begin their gauntlet.

Texas A&M’s closing stretch begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday against Tennessee inside Reed Arena. The Aggies will look to bounce back from Tuesday’s defeat and start another five-game winning streak with a No. 1 seed within reach.
