Tesla's Charging Empire Expands: Major Brands Embrace NACS Standard

The automotive industry is currently experiencing a significant transformation, driven by the accelerating electric vehicle (EV) revolution. Major automakers are making substantial plans to electrify at least half of their vehicle lineups by 2030, with regions like California and New York legislating to prohibit the sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2035. While the shift to EVs promises environmental benefits, a critical challenge remains: the charging infrastructure. In response, many manufacturers are now turning to Tesla for assistance, specifically by adopting its North American Charging Standard (NACS) port implementation.
Tesla's Supercharger EV charging network is widely acknowledged as the industry leader. Boasting approximately 23,500 stations, it is by far the largest, effectively mitigating range anxiety for EV owners. Crucially, its stations are generally more reliable than competing DC fast charging networks, and its use of the NACS port has made it the de facto industry standard. Consequently, numerous automakers are rapidly moving to integrate NACS, either by switching their vehicles' charging ports or, as a transitional measure, offering adapters that allow access to Tesla's NACS-based chargers.
Both Porsche and Audi have now joined the list of automakers embracing NACS, enabling their electric vehicles to access the extensive Tesla Supercharger network through newly supplied factory adapters. However, there are specific conditions and requirements for this access.
For Audi E-tron owners, access to the Supercharger network is becoming available. Most E-tron owners will be able to utilize the Audi factory-supplied NACS to J1772-CCS adapter. This adapter is being included as an accessory for new 2025 model year E-trons, including the Q6 E-tron, A6 Sportback E-tron, and E-Tron GT, which are presently arriving at dealerships. It is important to note that this adapter is exclusively designed for use with the DC fast charging system and is not compatible with Level 2 home or destination AC chargers that use the NACS plug. For AC charging, a dedicated NACS AC adapter or the car’s existing J1772 AC plug must be used. Audi has stated its intention to notify current E-Tron owners soon regarding adapter availability, though Q4 E-tron owners may not have immediate access. To enhance user experience, Tesla stations will begin appearing as Points of Interest (POI) within the MyAudi app and Audi MMI navigation. Furthermore, initiating and paying for a charge at a Tesla Supercharger will necessitate the use of the Tesla App, which also serves as a tool for locating Supercharger stations.
Porsche's approach to gaining Tesla Supercharger access for its EVs mirrors that of Audi. Owners will require a Porsche factory-supplied NACS to J1772-CCS adapter to connect to the Tesla Supercharger network, and like Audi, this adapter is intended solely for DC fast charging. Initially, owners will need to use the Tesla App for starting and paying for charging sessions, but Porsche plans to transition this functionality to the My Porsche app in the coming months. The NACS adapter will be provided free of charge to buyers of 2026 model year Taycan and Macan EVs. Owners of prior model year Taycan and all Macan vehicles will also qualify for a complimentary adapter but will need to await notification via their My Porsche app indicating readiness for reception. Distinctly, owners of 2024 and older Taycan models have the option to acquire an adapter immediately, though they will need to purchase it for $185, plus applicable sales taxes and shipping charges, from either the Porsche online shop or their local dealership.
