Teenage civil engineer who gained work experience during spare time will 'go far in industry'

A teenager who gave up his weekends and school holidays for work experience is forging a promising career path as a civil engineer.

Ryan Reid, 19, of Brampton, joined Carlisle-based Peacock Precision Services straight from leaving school and he is showing great promise in the industry having completed his Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) qualification after three years of studies.

Ryan combined his studies at Durham College with working on-site with Peacock Precision and will now work towards achieving his National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in civil engineering.

He has shown great potential since joining the company in 2021 and has worked on major projects including Carlisle Southern Link Road and the Hope Valley Rail Line.

“Working at Peacock Precision is great, and I couldn’t think of doing anything else if I’m honest,” said Ryan. “I like the challenge of completing a variety of jobs, and every day is a learning day.

“One of the things I enjoy most is being out on site and mingling with all the different people from all the trades working on the job.”

Ryan also paid tribute to Peacock Precision founder and owner Kieron Peacock for helping develop his knowledge and understanding of the industry.

He said: “I owe Kieron a lot for giving me the opportunity and taking a chance on me, so I try to do my best by him on every job.”

Ryan was offered the job as a trainee civil engineer after impressing Kieron with his desire to learn more and willingness to complete work experience during weekends and school holidays while only 15.

His strong work ethic and natural ability to complete a variety of tasks helps Ryan stand out from the crowd, according to Kieron.

He said: “From the very beginning, Ryan stood out as someone with a real passion for the work and a willingness to learn. There are not many kids at the age of 15 who would volunteer to spend their spare time working, but that shows Ryan’s strong determination to go far in the industry.

“He has already developed into a mature, reliable and valued member of the team, and we’re proud to support him as he continues to grow in his career.”

Ryan’s ongoing development underlines Peacock Precision Service’s commitment to providing young people with career opportunities and ongoing training.

Founded in Carlisle in 2018, Peacock Precision is a leading and expanding site specialist engineering business operating across the UK in the highways, housing, rail, public sector and retail industries.
