Ted's Future in Question: Seth MacFarlane Reveals Staggering 'Avengers'-Level CGI Costs Halt Season 3 Plans

Seth MacFarlane has indicated that there are "no plans" for a third season of his "Ted" prequel series, citing the show's prohibitively high production costs. MacFarlane explained that he was consistently informed by Peacock and Universal that the series was too expensive to produce and could not be made at a lower cost. Consequently, he, along with showrunners Brad Walsh and Paul Corrigan, deliberately crafted the final scene of the second season to connect directly to Mark Wahlberg's portrayal of John in the first "Ted" film, with Max Burkholder's character walking into a gym, implying a transition.
MacFarlane acknowledged that while a third season isn't entirely impossible, it would require significant "narrative acrobatics" and currently, no such plans are in motion. TheWrap reported that Peacock has yet to make a definitive decision regarding a third season. The live-action "Ted" TV series, based on the 2012 comedy film, follows a teenage John, played by Max Burkholder, as he navigates adolescence with his profane teddy bear, voiced by MacFarlane. The cast also includes Giorgia Whigham, Alanna Ulbach, Scott Grimes, and Ara Hollyday.
A major contributing factor to the high costs is the extensive use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) required to animate and act the titular bear. MacFarlane likened the weekly production workload to "doing an 'Avengers' movie every 22 minutes." He credited his production team, director of photography Jeff Mygatt, camera crew, visual effects crew, and visual effects supervisor Blair Clark, along with the team at Framestore in Melbourne, Australia, for successfully managing the demanding workload. MacFarlane emphasized that having the experience of producing two "Ted" films a decade prior was invaluable education that made the TV series feasible on a weekly basis.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the live-action series, Peacock introduced an animated "Ted" series in May 2025. This animated iteration features Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, and Jessica Barth reprising their roles from the original film, offering a different continuation of the "Ted" universe.
