Tech Titans Clash: Elon Musk Accuses Sam Altman of OpenAI Deception Amid Tesla Row

A long-standing feud between technology magnates Elon Musk and Sam Altman recently resurfaced on social media, ignited by allegations from the OpenAI CEO regarding an uncancelled Tesla vehicle reservation and an unrefunded deposit. Altman shared screenshots on X, claiming he placed an order for a Tesla Roadster on July 11, 2018, and requested a cancellation and a $50,000 refund on the same day. He further stated that the official web address for refund requests remained unavailable, leading him to wait “7.5 years” for resolution, despite his initial excitement for the car.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, swiftly responded to Altman's claims, asserting that the issue had been resolved and the refund provided within 24 hours. Musk also took the opportunity to reignite past tensions, stating, “You stole a non-profit,” and adding, “But that is in your nature,” referencing their previous clashes. This exchange brought their rivalry back into public view, highlighting the deep-seated conflicts between the two.
The roots of the animosity between Altman and Musk trace back to 2015, when they co-founded OpenAI. Their partnership dissolved in 2018 due to disagreements over the company's strategic direction, particularly regarding its commitment to remaining a non-profit entity. This fallout led to Musk's departure from OpenAI and the genesis of their ongoing feud. The tensions escalated further when Musk allegedly proposed a $97 billion takeover bid for OpenAI, an offer Altman promptly rejected, affirming that OpenAI was “not for sale.” Their rivalry has since continued through legal documents and public discourse.
Following this latest social media confrontation, netizens reacted with a mix of humor and observation. Many X users made light-hearted comments, with some expressing wishes for reconciliation, such as, “I really do hope that you guys decide to be friends and work together for the sake of humanity.” Others offered playful challenges or noted the perceived similarities in their personalities, commenting, “Elon, you know that you both have similarities to each other in terms of personality traits. The weirder thing is, you both mirror each others traits but call each other out on it.” The social media interaction served to once again highlight the complex and often public nature of their contentious relationship.
