Tech Talent Turf War Ignites: Meta Snags Apple's AI Brains for 'Superintelligence' Quest

Meta Platforms is significantly escalating its efforts to secure top artificial intelligence (AI) talent, establishing a new division named Superintelligence Labs. This strategic initiative is personally spearheaded by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who is leading an aggressive talent raid to assemble a team capable of advancing machine intelligence beyond human capabilities.
In a notable move, Meta has successfully recruited prominent AI researchers from Apple, namely Mark Lee and Tom Gunter. Mark Lee has already transitioned to Meta, while Tom Gunter is expected to join the team imminently. Their recruitment follows the earlier departure of Ruoming Pang from Apple, who also joined Meta with a multi-million-dollar compensation package. Pang previously led Apple's Foundation Models team, responsible for advanced AI features, and both Lee and Gunter worked closely with him, indicating a targeted acquisition of a cohesive and experienced AI development unit.

This aggressive talent acquisition by Meta underscores a broader trend within the technology industry, where major companies are engaging in high-stakes competition for AI expertise. This competition often involves offering substantial multi-million-dollar pay packages to fast-track the development of highly advanced AI systems. Furthermore, Mark Zuckerberg has publicly stated Meta's commitment to investing hundreds of billions of dollars into building several massive AI data centers, signaling a comprehensive and long-term strategy to dominate in the field of artificial intelligence.
