Team USA Bolsters Roster with Billings, Burrell for Crucial FIBA Qualifier Battle!
The U.S. women's basketball team has announced significant roster adjustments for the upcoming FIBA World Cup qualifier set to take place next week in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Monique Billings and Rae Burrell have been added to the squad, providing a bolstered lineup as the team prepares for international competition. These additions come as replacements for Aliyah Boston and Sonia Citron, both of whom are unable to participate due to injuries. Boston had missed the Unrivaled playoffs, and Citron was sidelined during the final part of the Unrivaled regular season, with both players suffering from what was described as a right lower extremity injury.
Monique Billings brings previous experience to the team, having been a part of the undefeated 2017 USA under-23 national team that competed in the Four Nations Tournament. For Rae Burrell, this qualifier marks a significant milestone as she is set to make her competitive debut for the U.S. national team. They join an already formidable and diverse group of athletes, including highly anticipated young stars such as Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, who represent the future of American basketball.
The roster is further strengthened by the presence of accomplished veterans and Olympic champions. The team will feature 2024 Olympic gold medalists Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young, whose experience and championship pedigree will be invaluable. Additionally, Dearica Hamby and Rhyne Howard, who earned bronze medals in the 3x3 competition at the 2024 Paris Games, are also on board. The roster is rounded out by Washington Mystics rookie Kiki Iriafen, showcasing a blend of youth, rising talent, and seasoned professionals.
Leading this talented ensemble is U.S. Olympic coach Kara Lawson, who will guide the team through the initial phase of the tournament in San Juan. Following her duties with the national team, Coach Lawson will return to Duke University to prepare the Blue Devils for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. She will be supported by a capable coaching staff, including assistants Natalie Nakase, Nate Tibbets, and Stephanie White, all of whom served as court coaches during the U.S. training camp held in December.
During the qualifier, the United States will face a challenging schedule, competing against Senegal, Puerto Rico, Italy, New Zealand, and Spain. Despite the intense competition, the Americans have already secured their qualification for the main FIBA World Cup event, scheduled to be held in Berlin from September 4-13. With their spot already guaranteed, the U.S. team is focused on maintaining its dominant international stature and is aiming for an unprecedented fifth consecutive World Cup championship.
