Teacher Service Commission Seeks New CEO, Announces Vacancies

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced two significant developments: the opening of 2,014 teaching vacancies and the search for a new Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). These announcements were made public on May 6, 2025.

Regarding the teaching vacancies, TSC aims to fill 1,309 posts in primary schools, 32 in junior schools, and 673 in secondary schools. Successful applicants will be employed on permanent and pensionable terms, replacing teachers who have left the service through national attrition. Interested and qualified candidates are required to submit their applications online via the TSC website by midnight on Monday, May 19, 2025. To qualify, applicants must be Kenyan citizens and registered teachers with the TSC. For primary school positions, a P1 certificate is required. Junior and secondary school applicants need a diploma in education and a minimum grade of C+ in two teaching subjects in KCSE or its equivalent. The TSC has specified that shortlisted candidates must present original academic and professional certificates. Applicants are warned against submitting multiple applications, as doing so will lead to disqualification. Manual applications are not accepted, and preference will be given to those who have not previously been employed by the TSC. Detailed information about vacancies per county and school is available on the TSC website.

In parallel with the recruitment of teachers, the TSC is also seeking a new Secretary/CEO to succeed Dr. Nancy Macharia, whose term ends on June 30, 2025. The incoming CEO will serve a five-year term, with the possibility of reappointment for an additional five years. Applicants for the CEO position must be Kenyan citizens and hold a university degree in education. They must also meet the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya and possess at least ten years of experience in education, administration and management, public administration, human resources, or financial management. Interested candidates can download the application form from the TSC website and submit it, along with required documents, to the Chairman’s office in Upper Hill, Nairobi, by Tuesday, May 27, 2025. Applicants must also provide clearance certificates from relevant bodies, including KRA, HELB, EACC, DCI, and CRB. The names of all applicants and the interview schedule will be published following the short listing process.

The new CEO will be the head of the TSC secretariat, the accounting officer, and the custodian of all Commission records. Key responsibilities include executing decisions of the Commission, assigning duties to and supervising staff, and ensuring the execution of the Commission’s mandate. The CEO will also be responsible for ensuring staff compliance with public ethics and values and the proper implementation of Part IV of the TSC Act.
