Ghana Government Plans to Reverse University Name Changes

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that public universities renamed during the Akufo-Addo administration will revert to their previous names. This decision follows consultations with key stakeholders and aims to reaffirm the foundational ethos and historical identities of the tertiary institutions, not to diminish the contributions of individuals after whom the institutions were named.
Speaking at the inauguration of the governing council of the CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), Mr. Iddrisu stated that he will present a bill to Parliament after a committee reviews the names. The university, formerly the Navrongo campus of the University of Development Studies, was renamed in 2019 when it achieved university status.
Clement Kubindiwor (CK) Tedam, after whom the university was named, was a significant Ghanaian politician and a founder of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He also served on the Council of State during the Kufuor administration. The decision to revert the university names is intended to reflect the integrity of the universities and their historical identities, according to Mr. Iddrisu.
Extensive consultations have been conducted with various stakeholders, including the academic community, traditional leaders, alumni associations, students, and civil society, to ensure a well-informed decision.
