Taylor Swift Unveils 12th Studio Album "The Life of a Showgirl," Garnering Praise from Nicki Minaj and 50 Cent

Taylor Swift officially released her highly anticipated 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, on Friday, October 3, drawing immediate attention from fans and fellow artists alike.
Hip-hop superstar Nicki Minaj was among the most vocal supporters, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the album. She singled out Wood for its layered, double-entendre lyrics, calling it “EXACTLY what I needed tonight,” and lauded Eldest Daughter for its authenticity, resonating with “lone wolves.” Minaj also celebrated the title track, The Life of a Showgirl, featuring Sabrina Carpenter, for Carpenter’s animated and in-character verse.
Playfully acknowledging a possible diss aimed at Charli XCX in Actually Romantic, Minaj quoted the line, “Taylor said ‘I heard you called me boring Barbie when the Coke’s got your brain,’” declaring the track “#Cancelled is diabolical” and dubbing Swift a “**battle rapper**,” urging her to “GO IN FOR THE KILL, TAYLOR.” Their public camaraderie traces back to 2015 and continues today, with Minaj previously expressing interest in collaborating with Swift.
Rapper 50 Cent also reacted enthusiastically after being name-checked on Ruin the Friendship, sharing the lyrics, “And it was not an invitation / But as the 50 Cеnt song played / Should’ve kissed you anyway,” on Instagram. He highlighted Swift’s exclusive nod, writing, “She shout me out, she don’t shout you out. LOL. THIS IS FOR BIG TIMERS ONLY!” This recognition places 50 Cent among a select group of artists Swift has referenced in her lyrics, including Janet Jackson, Charlie Puth, and Tim McGraw.
In her first radio interview since the album’s release on Capital Breakfast in the U.K., Swift revealed personal insights into her work. She noted that her fiancé, NFL star Travis Kelce, particularly enjoys the mid-tempo track Opalite, inspired by Kelce’s birthstone. Swift described it as a metaphor for manmade happiness and moving through past heartbreaks to find love. She elaborated on the lyrics:
"Life is a song, it ends when it ends / You move on / And that’s when I told you, ‘it’s alright’ / You were dancing through the lightning strikes / Sleeping in the onyx night / But now the sky is *opalite** / Oh-oh-oh my Lord."*
Swift also shared that her personal favorite is Wi$h Li$t, a track co-produced with Max Martin and Shellback. She described it as listing everything that would make her life complete, culminating in true love. Being one of the last songs recorded for the album, its completion gave Swift the sense that the “perfect album” was ready. She explained that The Life of a Showgirl reflects her current experiences in a way her previous albums rarely have, given the usual gap between recording and release.
Promotional activities included screenings of the 89-minute film Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl from October 3–5. The film featured the music video for the lead single The Fate of Ophelia, lyric videos for other tracks, and Swift’s personal insights. During her radio appearance, the Capital Breakfast team gifted her an opalite kitten and a sourdough loaf humorously decorated with album-themed puns like Actually Doughmatic and The Fate of Doughphelia, adding a playful touch to the launch festivities.
