Quentin Tarantino Announces New Cliff Booth Novel as Brad Pitt Returns for Netflix Film
Quentin Tarantino is expanding the world of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with a new Cliff Booth novel and a Netflix film directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt.Quentin Tarantino is returning to the world of Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, but this time the story of Brad Pitt's Cliff Booth is expanding across both a new novel and a Netflix film.
Tarantino's new novel, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, will be published on December 8 by Harper, continuing the story of the stuntman first introduced in his 2019 film.
The announcement comes as Netflix prepares to release The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, a new film written by Tarantino and directed by David Fincher.
Netflix has confirmed that Brad Pitt will reprise his Academy Award-winning role as Cliff Booth, with the film set eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.
This time, the story moves to 1977 Hollywood, where Booth has moved beyond his days as a stuntman and takes on a very different kind of role within the film industry.
Netflix describes the new chapter as taking place in a “very different Hollywood,” with Booth continuing his unpredictable life while becoming involved in the darker side of the entertainment business.
The film reunites Pitt with Tarantino's character but puts Fincher behind the camera.
Tarantino wrote the screenplay but decided not to direct, with Fincher taking over directing duties for the sequel.
The cast also includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Peter Weller.
The film will receive a two-week global IMAX run beginning November 25, before arriving on Netflix on December 23.
The novel arrives shortly afterwards, creating an unusual release strategy in which audiences can experience another chapter of Booth's story in print before watching the film on Netflix.
The book is not simply a general novel about Hollywood. Its story follows Booth in 1977, years after the events of the original film, as he works across different jobs and occasionally provides what the publisher describes as “clandestine services” for his friends.
The original Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, released in 2019, followed Booth and fading actor Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, as they navigated Los Angeles during the final years of Hollywood's 1960s era.
The film became a major commercial and critical success, earning Pitt his first acting Oscar for his supporting performance as Booth.
Tarantino previously expanded that world through his 2021 novelisation of Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, followed by his 2022 film-history book Cinema Speculation.
Now, nearly seven years after audiences first met Cliff Booth, the character is returning in two different forms.
The novel arrives December 8, while the film reaches IMAX theatres on November 25 before streaming on Netflix from December 23.
