Tanzania’s Vice President Philip Mpango has announced his retirement from public service to honour his late father's legacy and fulfil his dream, marking the end of his four-decade career in both the government and academia.

Speaking at the 20th anniversary of Ruaha Catholic University (RUCU) in Iringa on Wednesday, Mpango expressed his desire to return to agriculture, a field deeply rooted in his family's history.

“I have decided to retire from public service and go back to farming, which was my father’s lifelong occupation. I have served my country with commitment and integrity, now it’s time to return home and take up the hoe,” he stated as quoted by The Citizen Tanzania.

“I believe my late father would be proud to see me return to the land he so dearly loved. My journey has come full circle."

His decision to step down is also motivated by a commitment to youth empowerment, acknowledging that the majority of Tanzania's population comprises young people.

“We have been nurtured and we have served; now it is the turn of the youth. Over 75 percent of our population is made up of young people. It is time for them to make their mark,” he remarked.

Students, staff, and clergy present at the ceremony commended his commitment to public service and the astute leadership he has showcased in his illustrious career.

His announcement comes at a pivotal political moment in Tanzania, as the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and opposition parties gear up for a General Election slated for October 2025.

He therefore called for active civic participation ahead of the polls, urging citizens, particularly the youth, to vote wisely to secure their future.

“I strongly urge all citizens to safeguard the peace of our motherland during this electoral period. Let us vote for visionary and capable leaders who will manage our resources for the benefit of our future generations,” he said.

The economist and politician has served as the Vice President of Tanzania since March 30, 2021, after being appointed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of President John Magufuli.

Before the role, Dr. Mpango served as the Minister of Finance and Planning from 2015 to 2021 under the late President Magufuli's administration.

He holds a PhD in Economics and has extensive experience in economic policy and planning.

Before his ministerial role, Dr. Mpango worked as the Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority and has held various positions in Tanzania's economic and financial sectors.

He has also worked with international organizations, including the World Bank.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mpango has been known for his expertise in economics and financial management, playing a significant role in Tanzania's economic policies and development strategies.
