Tanzania's Trillion-Dollar Bet: New Railways Set to Revolutionize Regional Travel

Tanzania is embarking on one of Africa's most ambitious railway transformation initiatives, with a substantial financial allocation from its Ministry of Transport. For the 2026/27 financial year, TSh 2.872 trillion has been earmarked to accelerate comprehensive construction, rehabilitation, and modernization efforts across various rail networks. This monumental infrastructure investment is set to fundamentally reshape the movement of passengers and cargo throughout Tanzania, positioning the nation as a strategic transport hub within East and Central African markets.
At the heart of this transformation is the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which has already demonstrated its significant capacity to revolutionize domestic travel. Since the launch of passenger services in June 2024, the SGR has successfully transported over 5.5 million passengers between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma. A remarkable 2.5 million travelers utilized the service between July 2025 and March 2026 alone, marking a 22 percent increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. These figures indicate an average of approximately 9,300 daily passengers, effectively removing the equivalent of 170 large buses from Tanzanian roads each day, underscoring the SGR's quality and reliability.
To cater to this escalating demand, the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) enhanced its services by adding two extra daily connections between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro from April 2026, increasing total departures from four to six per day. The financial performance mirrors this rising popularity, with TSh 169 billion collected since operations commenced, and TSh 83 billion generated during the current financial year alone.
For travel professionals engaged in the African travel trade, these developments unlock compelling opportunities to integrate modern rail journeys into client itineraries. The SGR offers a distinct travel experience, characterized by contemporary carriages, comfortable seating, and picturesque views of the Tanzanian landscape, all while significantly reducing journey times. Tour operators can now market rail travel as both an efficient transport solution and an attractive experience in its own right, facilitating multi-destination packages.
The SGR network continues its planned expansion. The initial phase, spanning 1,219 kilometers from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, is progressing steadily. The second phase will introduce an additional 1,590 kilometers, incorporating crucial routes to Kigoma and extending onward into Burundi. Recent financial support, a concessional loan of US$1.277 billion, is dedicated to funding the ongoing construction of the Makutupora-Tabora and Tabora-Isaka sections, addressing previous implementation challenges.
Critically, Tanzania is strategically leveraging its SGR to serve as a regional trade and transport platform, fostering connectivity with neighboring countries. The construction of the Tabora-Kigoma section, covering 506 kilometers, and the Uvinza-Musongati line, extending 300 kilometers into Burundi, will ultimately link the Port of Dar es Salaam with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This regional integration transforms Tanzania from merely a single-country destination into a pivotal gateway for multi-nation African journeys.
Further enhancing regional connectivity is the rehabilitation of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) network. Following a concession agreement signed with Chinese contractor CCECC in September 2025, a substantial investment of US$1.4 billion is slated to revitalize this historic corridor. This project aims to dramatically increase cargo capacity from less than 150,000 tonnes annually to 2.4 million tonnes, while simultaneously creating an estimated 100,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Concurrently, the existing Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) is undergoing rehabilitation to bolster its resilience and capacity. This includes replacing lighter 45-pound rails with more robust 80-pound alternatives and strengthening bridges to accommodate increased axle loads. These improvements ensure the legacy network remains fully operational as SGR expansion progresses. Furthermore, new connection points are being constructed at Ruvu and Bahi, facilitating seamless cargo and passenger transfers between the older MGR and the modern SGR systems.
Looking ahead, TRC has set ambitious targets for the 2026/27 financial year, including transporting 4.75 million SGR passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo. The government's strategic vision anticipates the completion of the SGR from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza by the end of 2028, and its extension to Kigoma by 2029. By the 2034/35 financial year, the combined rail network is projected to move an impressive 10 million tonnes annually on the SGR and 4 million tonnes on the MGR. For forward-thinking travel and logistics businesses across sub-Saharan Africa, Tanzania's expansive railway program signifies more than just infrastructure development; it heralds the emergence of a rail-connected regional logistics hub poised to fundamentally transform travel and trade across East, Central, and Southern African markets in the coming decade.
