Tanzania Intensifies Bold Bid for Russian Tourist Influx
Tanzania is actively pursuing a strategic initiative to significantly boost its tourism sector by targeting Russia's substantial outbound travel market. The East African nation aims to attract at least one per cent of Russia's 13.4 million outbound travellers, a move that could bring approximately 134,000 Russian tourists annually within the next decade. This ambitious goal is projected to contribute more than one billion US dollars from the Russian market alone to Tanzania's tourism sector.
This concerted effort to diversify tourism source markets and tap into one of the world's highest-spending visitor segments is being spearheaded by the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB). During the ongoing St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2026) in Russia, TTB Director General, Ephraim Mafuru, outlined the country's long-term plans to achieve these figures. Tanzania's focus on Russian travellers stems from their notable strong spending power, particularly evident in the luxury tourism and premium travel experiences sector.
A key enabler for this push is the planned introduction of direct flights by Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), scheduled to commence early next month. These direct connections are expected to dramatically reduce travel time, which TTB research had previously identified as a major barrier limiting Russian tourist arrivals. The announcement of these flights has already generated considerable interest, with Ambassador John Ulanga, Director of International Trade and Economic Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, noting that approximately 20 Russian tourism companies immediately expressed interest in exploring Tanzania's tourism sector. This early positive signal was evident at the TTB pavilion at the St Petersburg forum.
Furthermore, economic diplomacy plays a crucial role in this strategy. President Samia Suluhu Hassan's recent visit to Moscow underscored Tanzania's commitment to attracting investors and fostering new economic opportunities. Her entourage included leaders and senior executives from strategic sectors such as infrastructure, tourism, and mining, reflecting a broader governmental effort to strengthen economic ties and deliver tangible national outcomes through international engagements. While approximately 12,000 Russian tourists visited Tanzania last year, TTB expresses confidence that stronger bilateral cooperation and targeted tourism promotion strategies will position Tanzania to significantly benefit from Russia's growing outbound tourism market in the coming years.
