Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff, Pallavi Joshi, Arvind Swami, Karan Tacker, M M Keeravani, debutant Shubhangi and many others attended the trailer launch of Kher’s directorial venture Tanvi The Great at a multiplex in Mumbai. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 and later also had its premiere in New York, USA. The surprise guest at the NYC premiere was none other than the legendary actor Robert De Niro. Both Anupam and Robert worked together in Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and have been in touch since.

Tanvi The Great trailer launch: Anupam Kher BREAKS silence on Robert De Niro’s feedback: “He was to attend for just 15 minutes; stayed till the interval; I made sure ki log dekh rahe hai ki main inke saath baitha hoon!”

Anupam Kher revealed, “I had not thought that I’ll invite him. However, I spoke to his wife Tiffany Chen. I asked her, ‘Tiffany, would you like to come?’. Two hours before the premiere of New York was to start, Tiffany called and informed me, ‘Bob is coming with me’. Robert is called Bob. I asked her, ‘Mr De Niro is coming himself?’ There was chaos all around. She told me, ‘He is coming only for 15 minutes’.”

Anupam continued, “It was very strange to sit next to him. There was me, Mr De Niro and his wife. I checked to make sure ki log dekh rahe hai na ki main inke saath baitha hoon (smiles)! That fan moment doesn’t go away. During my days in drama school, I did research on his first two films – Mean Streets (1973) and Taxi Driver (1976).”

What was Robert De Niro’s feedback? Anupam Kher revealed, “He kept looking at me and said, ‘Nice. Your hair looks very nice. Good job with the wig’. Then he loved the music. He stayed back till the interval which was a big thing for me!”

Meanwhile, Anupam Kher mentioned and thanked all the major actors and HODs in the film. He addressed actor Anang Desai and said, “You came all the way to that place to shoot. Though you were so wonderful, I had to cut your role! You now have just one scene. But I promise you that I’ll give you a bigger role in my next film. Thank you for coming just to do that one scene.”

Tanvi The Great releases in cinemas on July 18.
