Sydney Sweeney Thriller Shatters Streaming Records, Dominates Charts!

Director Paul Feig, known for his versatile filmography ranging from comedies like Bridesmaids to fantastical features such as Ghostbusters, has recently achieved significant impact with his psychological thriller, The Housemaid. This film, distinguished by its twisty premise and dark comedic elements, emerged as a sleeper hit, captivating audiences and critics alike.

Starring Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway, Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester, and Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester, The Housemaid is based on Freida McFadden’s acclaimed book. The narrative follows Millie, a young woman striving to rebuild her life after a troubled past, as she takes a live-in housemaid position for Nina Winchester. What begins as a potential fresh start quickly devolves into a perilous entanglement of secrets, manipulation, and shifting power dynamics within the Winchester household.

The film proved to be a remarkable box office success, earning $125 million domestically and nearly $400 million worldwide. Beyond its theatrical run, it also became an instant hit across streaming and PVOD platforms. Notably, The Housemaid drove record-breaking subscriber acquisitions and streaming viewership on the Starz app and its on-demand platforms, having debuted on the service on April 1. Its success is further underscored by a 73% Rotten Tomatoes critics' rating, with an even higher audience score of 92%.

Capitalizing on this widespread acclaim, a sequel titled The Housemaid’s Secret is already in active development. Also based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling follow-up novel, the sequel has been given a release date of December 17, 2027. The plot will continue Millie’s journey, depicting her in a new housekeeping role for a woman she is never allowed to meet, leading her to uncover secrets potentially darker than her own.

Lionsgate is set to produce the sequel, aiming for another major box office success by offering a darker, R-rated thriller during the competitive holiday season. Sydney Sweeney is confirmed to return to her role, with Michele Morrone also reprising his character, Enzo. Additionally, Kirsten Dunst will join the cast in a new role, and Paul Feig is slated to return as director. The original film has a runtime of 131 minutes and was written by Rebecca Sonnenshine and Freida McFadden, with Todd Lieberman and Paul Feig serving as producers.
