Suunto Adds Track Running Mode, and 38 New Data Fields | DC Rainmaker

Published 2 days ago3 minute read

Over the past few days Suunto has rolled out firmware updates adding a slate of data fields to their current-gen watches, plus a few new features. The big ticket feature is Track Running mode, which they announced with the Suunto Run last month. That mode is akin to what other companies have, which will lock onto the track automatically, giving you highly accurate distance and pacing functionality. It’s cool, and works well.

Their announcement of these features coming to the other units tracks with previous statements they made around adding the other Suunto Run features into existing watches. However, not quite all of those features made it into this release (which also tracks with them saying it’d be over the course of the summer).

In any case, here’s the watches that get these updates:

Suunto Race S (firmware notes)
Suunto Race (firmware notes)
Suunto Vertical (firmware notes)

Do note that for whatever reason, the Suunto Ocean is not included on this firmware update. I suspect that’s because of extra/longer testing, the same as Garmin does for their firmware updates for their dedicated diving computers.

And then here’s the full list of features and data fields added:

As regular readers know, I love me a good list of new data fields, and these ones are appreciated. That’s especially notable in the Suunto realm, where I’ve long argued that many of the Suunto App data fields need to be pulled back into the product as native fields. We’ve seen them start to do that with the Suunto Run (mostly out of necessity, in that it doesn’t support the Suunto Apps), but hey, I’ll take it no matter how I can get it.

With that, thanks for reading!
