Suspect dies following Atchison officer-involved shooting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The in Atchison, Kansas has died from his injuries, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The Atchison Police Department said that around 5:45 p.m. Friday, officers responded to North 9th Street on reports of an armed person breaking into an apartment. When officers arrived, one had multiple shots fired at him.

While the shots struck the officer’s patrol vehicle, the officer was not struck. The suspect, then fled back into a residence and backup was called to the scene.

During the incident, Atchison police learned a woman who the suspect knew was being held inside the residence. Police then requested the Kansas Highway Patrol’s Special Response Team and KBI High Risk Warrant Team.

While officers were attempting to negotiate with the suspect, police said more shots were fired at officers.

KBI said that preliminary information shows that around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, a rescue attempt was made. During that attempt, the suspect and the hostage were briefly separated. A KHP trooper fired at the suspect, striking him, and the hostage was safely rescued.

The suspect, identified as Bryson McCray, 36, of St. Joseph, Missouri, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The KBI reports McCray died from his injuries early Monday morning. An autopsy is scheduled.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
